Wrap & Latest Gigs

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday The 29th June 2017

Continuing the recent run of great touring bands visiting the Kingdom of Wonder, Adelaide-based PlanB will be making a return to Sharky Bar this Friday evening. Inspired by originators like Dexy’s Midnight Runners and the great Stax Records soul groups, PlanB combine a rocking rhythm section with a cooking horn section, and play almost entirely their own original repertoire. While the band prepare for a one-night-stand in Phnom Penh, followed by a brace of gigs in Temple-town, Leng Pleng got in touch with PlanB bandleader, bass player and backing vocalist Peter Flierl to find out more:

“We always try to tour with the full brass section and the current Fire Rooster Tour is no exception . Cambodia will witness the full 8-piece PlanB experience, including traditional PlanB three piece horn lineup of trombone, trumpet & flugelhorn…” –

Earlier on Friday, Phnom-Penh based all-original rock trio Road to Mandalay will be getting back to one of their favourite venues, Botanico. Copies of their recently-released debut EP will be on sale at the gig. Read more about the band’s raucous alternative riffage in this Leng Pleng interview with Road To Mandalay.

The Box Office is boldly sallying forth into the Phnom Penh live music scene with a new weekly Saturday acoustic slot. Diana Bailey Band got things going last week with a session of powerful, soulful indie and ‘country-ish’ tunes (hear Diana’s wonderful voice again this Friday at Oscar’s). This weekend, good ol’ boys Wrigley & Pearl will reprise their lively mix of swing-jazz and country at the small-but-perfectly-formed Street 242 venue.

Scott Bywater will be reprising his innovative creative partnership with WASH’s Warren Daly this Saturday for a special one-off performance entitled Red River. This multi-media piece is based around the reading of a specially-written text by Scoddy, accompanied by ambient music and beautiful visual projections by the ‘Invisible Agent’ Mr Daly. Stunning vocalist Marianna Hensley will add her own improvised melodies to the show. Contact Scott directly via scoddy67@gmail.com to reserve your place within the limited, cabaret lounge-style seating plan at Plantation in Phnom Penh.

Later on Saturday, the newly-opened Racquia Republic (Street 102, Phnom Penh) will be hosting the number one party band in Cambodia – Hypnotic Fist Technique. The band have created their very own outrageous home-brew of hip-hop, funk, jazz, punk, reggae and every other label you can think of, all delivered in a very high energy stage show.

“With all the grace and power of a gorilla ballerina, The Technique return with a blistering set of jams to kick your summer off right. Come see HFT before they take a break to record some new music and find some new vibes to jam on in the future… get ready to bounce like your heartbeat depended on it with Hypnotic Fist Technique.” – MIKE DYNAMO

Thanks Mike, we could not have put it better ourselves ! Check out our Leng Pleng interview with Mike Dynamo to find out more about the fantastic Hypnotic Fist Technique.

‘Lets call it… The Seng Thoung Drifters!’ Clay George brainstorming at the (Sharky) bar. Pic: Steve Porte.

Honky-Tonk heroes The Seng Thoung Drifters will begin a new series of Monday night gigs at Oscar’s On The Corner this week. The eve of U.S. Independence Day is an appropriate time to schedule a quintessentially American-style repertoire of all those Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson covers that seem to inspire hard liquor-drinking and spontaneous cowboy hat-wearing. Just perfect for a Monday night in Phnom Penh! Clay George leads a five-piece band of similarly-inclined country music-loving players.

Whatever you’re up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and… see you around the traps!
