Stan Paleco will lead a jazz-infused trio at the Stage Bar PP weekly jam session tonight (Thursday). All musicians are welcome to try out the factory-fresh sound system and backline at the new Phnom Penh riverside music venue. If brand new amplifiers and drumkit are not enough to tempt you on to the stage, it is surely worth a trip to the venue just to hear superb musicians Stan (guitar), Danzo (bass) and Kuzey (drums) do their improvised, free-form thing. It’s a jam, man!

Worldly inspiration: Shore to Shore album pre-launch

It’s certainly been a long time coming, but Scott Bywater is almost ready to release his long-awaited solo album From Shore to Shore. Let the celebrations begin this Friday early evening at Farm to Table, when ‘Scoddy’ will be joined by special guests Kak Channty (of CSP), Marianna Hensley, James Speck and Colin Grafton for a special acoustic performance of the album. Anyone who is half-way familiar with the Phnom Penh music scene will already know many of the superb tracks on Shore to Shore – but the album represents the first time the songs have been arranged and recorded with the full professional studio treatment. Scott told Leng Pleng:

“Pre-ordering, from scoddy.bandcamp.com will allow the downloading of two tracks as a preview: the popular Stuck Inside of Phnom Penh with the Memphis Blues Again (It’s not the Mississippi, it’s the Mekong) and the briefer titled Gambling Heart. The complete digital album and CD release will take place next month, but it’s time to celebrate getting this far.” – SCOTT BYWATER

Kak Channty herself has a busy Phnom Penh weekend in store, with a brace of gigs at Chinese House. The Cambodian Space Project will be back in town for an extravaganza of retro Cambo rock’n’roll on Saturday night, followed by a more mellow Sunday daytime acoustic session with singer Channty, guitarist Julien Poulson and upright bassist Dan Davies – exploring a lighter, folkier domain of the CSP universe. Watch the video below to see what happened when the Channty Trio met Road to Mandalay guitarist Adam Schumacher during a live studio interview for USAID.

Join us now for a very special Let's Chat! as we are featuring an in-studio, acoustic performance by The Cambodian Space Project and interview of lead singer Kak Chanthy!

Longtime Phnom Penh-based musician James Speck let us know about an exciting upcoming gig next week, but it is unfortunately not one that the public will be able to attend! James wrote this fascinating article about The Hensley Trio and Miss Sarawan’s scheduled performance at Correctional Centre 2, Prey Sar Prison:

“Research shows that music benefits our mental and physical health in numerous ways, Music has been found to help cancer patients communicate their feelings, manage stress and ease physical pain and discomfort. It can also reduce anxiety and improve the quality of life. Given these simple facts, doing a music performance at a prison seems like a really good idea.” JAMES SPECK – READ THE FULL PIECE HERE

The hardest-working rapper in Cambodia, 12ME, dropped another super music video this week – showcasing his Khmer language skills alongside Sang Sok Serey on their track ‘Don’t Miss Your Chance’:

Whatever you’re up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and… see you around the traps!
