Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday The 26th October 2017

Just when you thought things might be getting a little slow on the Cambodian music scene (it is October, after all!), another wave of visiting artists, new acts and festivals crashes into the beachhead, setting up a great next few days of live gigs in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Ian F is Ian Mark Francisco, lead guitarist and singer of irrepressible party band Hypnotic Fist Technique. Ian has a remarkable voice – possessing of a very wide vocal range, pitch-perfect intonation and even an uncanny ability to imitate the sound of musical instruments. Accompanied by ‘The Amazing’ Antti Siitonen (on cajon and vocals), Ian will be stepping out as frontman performing a spiky nineties-and-noughties ‘Alt-Rock’ repertoire at Farm to Table this Friday and at Hops Beer Garden on Sunday.

The guys at Jazz Club Phnom Penh have picked an exquisite final cadence upon which to resolve their musical odyssey at the Street 282 Phnom Penh venue. Visiting French jazzers The Frank Hergott Trio will perform two shows at the club this Friday and Saturday. While the full-moon Jazz Club stage backdrop has become iconic – and the intimate listening environment unrivalled – in Phnom Penh over the last fifteen months, the time has come for Sebastien Adnot and Nono McKay to move on to bigger things. The cosily-proportioned Jazz Club live room, situated above an Italian restaurant, has been the scene of an extraordinary number of fantastic gigs performed by the likes of locally based Krom, Jahzad and The Metta Legita Trio in addition to visiting stars such as Darien Dean, Marco Vezzoso and Luca Ciarla – not to mention the near-nightly jazz manouche sessions performed by Seb and Nono themselves.

Fans of the Jazz Club should not fear, however, as word has arrived of Jazz Club Elite. The men from Marseilles have exchanged an Italian cucina for a Brasilian rodizio – building their new, bigger and better-equipped premises above the Samba restaurant in Tuol Kork. More details coming soon, but from what we have already heard about Jazz Club Elite, Leng Pleng can say it sounds absolutely fantastic. In the meantime, we would advise you to reserve your tickets ahead of time with the Jazz Club for the closing gigs this Friday and Saturday.

UK DJ legend Eddie Richards will be returning to Phnom Penh on Saturday night for a session of signature tech-house. Veteran clubman Richards has been knocking out the toughest beats in dance music long before acronyms like ‘EDM’ were coined.  Check out his set during the early hours of Sunday morning at Pontoon Pulse and later this week at the Village Cafe Halloween party in Siem Reap.

Cambodian Living Arts will be hosting a superb line-up of world musicians this weekend across the Heritage Hub, Sala Thaom Chas, Krousar Thmey, and Center for Khmer Studies venues in Siem Reap. Check out the full festival program here for lots more info about the planned workshops and performances, which includes shows by The Champasak Shadow Theater (from Laos) Law Ka Nay (from Myanmar) and Kohei Nishikawa (from Japan).

Whatever you’re up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and… see you around the traps!
