New Year celebrations amongst the music community were a little subdued with the news on Monday 30 December of the sudden and tragically premature death of Sinn ‘Kol’ Sethakol, renowned singer, much loved sound engineer and all-round nice guy. Collections have already been undertaken this week, but anyone wishing to contribute to the donation – to be handed directly to his family – can contact Leng Pleng on email@example.com.
In a quiet start to the year, many venues are not putting on music until next weekend. Here’s a quick roundup of what is happening.
Euan Gray is solo at Farm to Table, while jazz duo Scotch ‘n’ Soda (Marianna Hensley and James Atkinson) are at Botanico. Jeffro Starks and Colin Grafton bring the blues to Alchemy, and the Boxchords are at Bassac Lane. Band@Work offer a Queen tribute night at Hard Rock Café Phnom Penh, and K’n’E are at Oscar’s on the Corner. In Kampot, the GC Riders are at Banyan Tree.
Come Saturday, Ernie Buck is at Botanico, while Meta House present an evening of cinema, poetry and music with RJ Marshall and Antonio Pineda. Meanwhile The Pink Mangoes are at Alchemy, and K’n’E carry on at Oscar’s on the Corner.
On Monday, experience something different at Java Tuol Tom Pong with an evening of traditional Japanese song and dance performance. And The Electric Socks return to their Monday night residency at Oscar’s on the Corner for the new year.
In other news, Phnom Penh favourite Roxanne Dumont’s band Les Floxs released a music video, Panique Climatique over the weekend, and in case you missed it, Kampot Radio did an audience-sourced top 100 countdown on Tuesday 31 – they’ve published the list today.
