Special wrap – Saturday 8 May 2021

Greetings:

LengPleng has been as quiet as the stages, but there is, if you look closely, a bounce around and a few things to get excited about.

From behind the scenes, LengPleng is keenly assisting a new experiment Come on in my kitchen, that kicks off tonight, Saturday 8 May, at 8 pm.  The concept is to allow the audience, via Facebook Live, to virtually eavesdrop on a selection of solo performers as if they are passing the guitar around a kitchen table.  Marianna Hensley, Joe Wrigley, Greg Beshers, Gareth Bawden, Scoddy Bywater and even a special surprise guest will be taking part in the first run through.  Tune in via the LengPleng Facebook page from 8 pm – type in the chat box to let them know you’re there, and where you are.  If the concept is proven, the plan is for an on-going rolling roster of participants – no worries with geography, just juggling timezones!

While many of you will have heard about the Funan Beat Empire’s album Retrofuturism released last month, they’re not the only ones that have been busy.   Pianist Metta Legita and flautist Jennifer Bird have collaborated on a new EP, Cikaracak (the word for water droplet in the language of the Sundanese in Java).   “I didn’t want the pandemic situation to stop us from creating, composing, and producing music for an audience,” writes Metta. “The smaller duo format allowed us to explore compelling nuances that were quite different from those on my previous album Scenic Spirit, which was centred around the rhythm section. It is my hope that we as musicians can create something positive and inspire others.”

Links galore for videos and streaming Cikaracak:           Vimeo               YouTube            Facebook           Spotify               Apple Music

Also out there producing music are our friends from Bangalore, The F16s, who toured through Phnom Penh a couple of years ago.  They’ve just released a single on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to Give India towards COVID-19 relief.

Also of note, the long running open mic Sunday Sundowner Sessions at Tacos Kokopelli have moved online for the moment – check the Facebook page on Sunday afternoon for the link, runs from 6 – 7 pm.

And don’t forget the always evolving delights of KampotRadio.com.

If there’s things LengPleng should know about, please let us know.

See you (eventually) around the traps.
