Institut Francais du Cambodge have another cool and interesting event tonight (Thursday) – when they will host Olivier Marguerit – a multi-instrumentalist from France. Check out the video below for a preview of ‘O’’s unusual brand of ‘anti-cool’ modern-electro pop fusion.
A true legend of the Phnom Penh music scene, the enigmatic Oscar has been rocking away behind the drums, behind the microphone and behind the bar at Oscar’s Bar for nine years now. He will be marking the birthday at Oscar’s On The Corner this weekend with a bunch of different acts and, of course, sets by the Oscar’s house band. He is probably the most underrated vocalist in Phnom Penh, with his ability to tear into throaty, soulful versions of tough songs by James Brown and The Beatles often overlooked in the smoky midnight hour in a small upstairs club hidden away at the extremity of Street 104.
Hypnotic Fist Technique will lead the proceedings at Oscar’s on Saturday night, regaling us once again with their ever-evolving, always exciting and often improvised fusion of hip-hop, rock, RnB and much more. This week, we spoke to HFT MC Mike Dynamo to get the back-story regarding the most happening expat band in Cambodia right now:
“We’re gonna play Oscar’s ninth birthday party. Really the plan is to… i think this is going to be jam-heavy show. We’re gonna play some originals and try and have as much fun as possible.
We’re there for the crowd. We interact with the crowd. I think about live shows as… it’s not just a musical experience, it’s an opportunity to talk, tell some jokes, celebrate birthdays, do whatever. Every show is not that and not everybody wants that experience. It’s very much a transaction, trying to connect in a way that works for both parties. The crowd can operate as a kind-of collective. Happy Birthday? That’s a great thing. We’ll do announcements, of course. It’s that old-school hip-hop block party style. As much as we love MC-ing and MCs are able to spin these amazing stories – tales of triumph and victory, talk about crime and death and pain and partying and butts and whatever MCs talk about… it’s always worth remembering, on that historical tip, that the MC was invented because the DJ could not spin the records and talk at the same time! The announcements were : ‘somebody’s light is on in the parking lot… somebody’s got a birthday in here’. Get the party started, give people information, be a part of the party, not above it. At least that’s how I see it.”
A cool event is taking place on Sunday afternoon in Phnom Penh, when a host of young Khmer artists will line up to showcase their original compositions at The Mic – Cambodia Original Song Concert. Both pop and alternative genres will be featured and there will be appearances from stars such as Nikki Nikki and P-Sand. The concert will be staged at Institute of Technology of Cambodia. Here’s a video from a previous event, featuring a song by Cage Pitch.
Whatever you’re up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and… see you around the traps!
