Friday night in Phnom Penh Get in the Penh XXI presents transcendental black metal band from Brooklyn, NYC, Liturgy, supported by hometown heroes Nightmare AD and new hardcore post punk band Johatsu.  Promoter Mia Lee says: “Liturgy’s leader Haela Hunt-Hendrix is quite a big name in the black metal and the hardcore scene in the US, I’m really looking forward to that – and we will also travel to Siem Reap on Saturday for a show at Atlantis.  I’m also excited to play the first show with Johatsu, a new band with members of Soselo Summer and Men of Faith.”  Early show (8 pm) at Oscar’s on the Corner, $2.50 on the door.

Phnom Penh’s very own 21st Century brass band, Brass on the Block, have released an entertaining video of their cover of the Golden Era classic Jeas Cyclo, by Yol Auralong.   Check it out here.

Psykic Shock Release – Joshua Chiang’s old/new outing

On Friday, simultaneously at Cloud in Phnom Penh and The Pizza Garden in Siem Reap, listening parties will be held for the new six-treack release The Psykic Elektric Experience by Joshua Chiang.  Josh was good enough to answer some of LengPleng’s pressing questions.

LP:  It’s been a long time since we’ve heard the name Psykic Elektric – when were these songs last performed?  Why now?  And how much of the original line-up are we hearing here?
JC: The last gig was performed on 29th Oct 2022 at the Halloween party at The Deck featuring also Spiked Gravy and Soselo Summer.  All the instruments were recorded with the original band members.

Back for more: Brett Perkins

Returning to Cambodia this week is Brett Perkins, an American singer-songwriter who was here for the first time only a couple of months ago.  LengPleng caught up with him just before he packed his bags and headed for the aeroplane.

LP:  Let’s get you introduced to those who didn’t cross your path earlier this year.
BP:  I’m based in Copenhagen, Denmark, but I’m originally from Los Angeles.  I’ve always been a songwriter, not always full-time pursuing the career – I’ve had many odd jobs to survive, like a lot of musicians, mostly in advertising and promotion, while I could still do gigs.
