The Leng Pleng Interview

Proof of concept: Initial G launches Genjutsu

There’s a new hiphop outfit becoming visible on the horizon, steaming out of the LOLA Music Lounge Thursday night open mic with speed and intent, led by MC Initial G (Hypnotic Fist Technique, Funan Beat Empire). Seeing Genjutsu coming, LengPleng sat down with G at LOLA to talk band-making, the local scene and entry fees.

“I’m still fresh to the game,” G notes. “2016 was the first time I ever attempted to perform music professionally, so really I’ve had a five-year long career to this point, if you deduct two from the COVID lockdown periods. I’ve previously been involved in all-original acts, back when they were less popular – these days original music is very much in vogue.”

Phnom Penh-based pianist and composer Metta Legita has released a video (filmed by Bjorn Leonhard) of her new composition Hampura, which you can view on YouTube.  “The title Hampura comes from the Sundanese language and carries a profound meaning of forgiveness, acceptance, and inner peace. I sought to channel these universal sentiments, which are at the heart of the piece, through the expressive medium of piano composition.”

Kampot act Summer Lee Carlson & Mute Speaker are starting a new album release next week – the first song, Respectable People, will be available on 28 June.  “Each show this month is premiering the new music live, and we’ll be doing a waterfall drop – one new song every six weeks,” says Summer.  Find it when it arrives at Spotify, Apple, Youtube, Amazon or your other favourite streaming platform.
