Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Stuart Cottom.  Australian singer and guitarist Stuart Cottom was for a while the only barang semi-regular performer in Battambang; this year he relocated to Phnom Penh and has been doing the round of open mics.  He now hosts the Sunday Sessions at Bar Oz on the riverside – this weekend it will be held at the special Christmas Day time of 7 pm.

Do you have a pet musical hate?
It’s less a musical hate than a musical performance hate. Whenever I don’t know a song off by heart, I hate having to sing to my music score or phone and not sing to the audience.

A private musical indulgence:
Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Pink and other powerful female singers with huge vocal ranges.

The year you first came to Cambodia:
I visited Siem Reap and Angkor Wat in November 2011, but was offered a job and moved to Battambang in 2013. Lived in Camodia ever since and moved to Phnom Penh in April this year.

An early music memory:
Listening to our cat caterwauling to a cassette tape soundtrack of Cats on our way to have her spayed in Tamworth. We ended up having an accident in Scone going over a frozen bridge and never making it to vet, so she had to wait.

The last thing you had to eat:
Hot wings at Lone Star on St 23. Excellent.

A country you want to visit:
Ever since I was a kid watching Jacques Cousteau exploring the Amazon River, I’ve wanted to visit Brazil. Somehow, it is the only continent I have yet to visit. Cuba is also on my bucket list.

A book or movie you keep going back to:
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus which is surprisingly different from the depictions in films and popular culture.

What languages do you have?
English, a lttle French and a smattering of Khmer.

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
I guess my primary instrument is my voice and I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I really fell in love with singing doing musical theatre and playing Oliver in an amateur musical theatre troupe called Kalang Kapers in 1984.  I have owned a guitar since 1998 (which I still have) but only really started learning to play this year. Before that I was a paint by numbers guitar player but I’ve been focusing on learning key signatures, relative major and minor keys, notes on the fret board, scales, ear training and using more than just the first four frets.

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
In 1999 I worked on Baz Luhrmann’s first film, Strictly Ballroom in the Sound Department.  And I used to work as a phlebotomist.

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
An early gig by Miles Davis or Dizzy Gillespie. Seeing incredible artists as they are just starting out.

A question from the last participant: Dead or alive, one person you can choose, who would you love to work with? Why?
I’d love to play and/or sing with Alicia Keys and just get her to help me vocally.
