Greetings:
We are pleased to welcome back to Cambodia PlanB, of Adelaide in South Australia, who’ve been here once or twice or more. This year, with a brand new lead singer, they commence their tour in Siem Reap with shows on Friday at Laundry and Saturday at Pomme, before heading to Phnom Penh for shows at The Deck on Monday and Home Chamkar on Wednesday. Next weekend they’re at Kampot River Nest on Friday and Oscar’s on the Corner on Saturday. These gigs are being sponsored by Music Matters Cambodia (with also big support from The Deck) – the Monday and Wednesday gigs will include a charity book drop on to help build a new library for Community Academy For English (theirs was destroyed in recent storms). Music Matters Cambodia are further sponsoring Community Academy For English to build and stock a music and arts room.
Also on tour this weekend are Japanese metal band Harenchi – on Friday they’ll be in Phnom Penh at Cloud with After God, and then on Saturday at Atlantis in Siem Reap.
Also also see at the bottom of the page the latest Cambodian tour dates for Geography of the Moon who will be back here in January.
Getting the weekend started early on Thursday in Phnom Penh, Acoustic Battle #5 us on at Big Wig, Dr George hosts the jazz jam at The Deck and Botanico offer a Thanksgiving dinner with Two Country Drunks. Elsewhere Blue Notes (Colin, Keiko, Phil) are at Comptoir, Miss Sarawan are at Samai Rum Distillery and The Extraordinary Chambers go late at Oscar’s on the Corner. In Kampot, Poca is at The Bay and Vy Nget of the Kampot Playboys is at Madi Bar.
On Friday find Greg Beshers at The Vine, JAG Fusion Trio (James, Andrey & Gaby) at House of Jazz and More, Punch Drunk at The Tin Hat and Poca Y Nestor at Au Marche. The Phnom Penh Songwriters Festival Listening Room Concert at Stories features Ysabel Rubis, Kevin Sysyn, John Memery, Scott Bywater and Ben Etc. Later Montra are at Oscar’s on the Corner. In Kampot, Max & Chiet are at Madi Bar and in Siem Reap Kiko & Carlos are at The Panthers Hut.
Saturday afternoon in Phnom Penh Mimi & the Merrymakers present two sets of Christmas sing-alongs at Farm To Table, then later Nestor & Pablo are at Botanico, Mr Joe is at Noisy Chili, PhnomPenhers are at Stories and Brooke Palmer is at Tropico. Muz Muskett opens up early at Oscar’s on the Corner before The Extraordinary Chambers. On the coast Sax on the Beach (Raph & Phil) are at The Wave: Kep West and Frankie Teardrop Dead are at The Bay in Kampot. In Siem Reap, Chema & DJ Braythedon are at Infusion Bar.
On Sunday find Brett Perkins at The Vine, John Peter at Botanico, Stu Cottom at Bar Oz and the Sunday Sundowners open mic at Tacos Kokopelli. Later Dr G Trio are at House of Jazz and More and Shaken Spirit are at Oscar’s on the Corner.
A LengPleng Boost
All that and the extras – The House of Jazz and More
One of the flurry of new venues appearing at the commencement of high season 2025 is House of Jazz and More, on St 450 in Tuol Tom Pong. LengPleng went boldly forth to investigate, and chat with the owner, Chef Jay.
One comes off the quiet street into an entrance space with abstract paintings hung to the left and a music-themed mural-in-progress on the right; one then walks into the bar itself, a cozy little barroom that seats only 24, with interior walls covered in vintage LP covers that immediately set a jazz club tone. The low stage is fully set up for a small band, with a drum kit, amps and a keyboard.
Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about
Paul Matthews. The new lead singer for long-running band out of Adelaide, South Australia, Plan B. See their tour dates this week and next at the top of the page.
Do you have a pet musical hate/pet peeve?
Backing tracks used for live performances ie; I like to hear and witness a saxophonist performing, not replaced by technology in a live setting.
A private musical indulgence:
I find it difficult to believe music can be an indulgence at all. For me, music is a remedial universal all-healing balm for the senses and should be applied daily.
The year you first came to Cambodia:
This is my first tour to Cambodia so I am really looking forward to the experience.
An early music memory:
My earliest musical memory was seeing on television Errol Brown from Hot Chocolate singing Emily. It was then I understood how powerfully emotive music was at the tender age of three years, and wanted to play part in writing and performing such songs myself that could resonate and move me as such songs like the above mentioned.
The last thing you had to eat:
The last thing I ate was a vegan omelette with a vietnamese coffee at a lovely cafe in Bien Vien, before our treck via bus to Cambodia.
Stagefright: yes or no?
I seldom suffer stage fright. But being a new member to this amazing band I have taken upon myself the high standard required in performing. There’s been a surmountable amount of material to get through and learn. This takes time in finding your feet and comfortably familiarising yourself with every musical nuance within the band. Finally, I am pleased to say the songs are starting to resonate more with me, enough to work my stage craft. Providing stage has enough room for us/me.
