Department of Bandcamp Friday
For beginners: Bandcamp.com is an online music distribution platform that connects music makers with music buyers – a place where artists and bands can sell digital downloads of their recorded material. Once a quarter Bandcamp waives their fees for 24 hours – Bandcamp Friday – so that artists benefit from the full price paid for their work, an initiative that began during the COVID period and now continues.
This Friday is Bandcamp Friday (in Cambodia Friday 3 pm to Saturday 3 pm), and there is plenty of Cambodian-made music ready for your enjoyment, from Kampot Playboys to Vibratone to Ariane Parkes to Nightmare A.D. to Soselo Summer to Reign in Slumber to Joshua Chiang to The Goldilocks Zone to Geography of the Moon to Scott Bywater and more besides.
Also new addition to the local scene, Ben Etc., is tomorrow releasing new music to coincide with Bandcamp Friday, with all proceeds to be donated to HOME (Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics), an NGO that advocates for the rights and wellbeing of low-wage migrant workers. runs a crisis shelter and helpdesks, and also provides subsidised skills training for domestic workers in Singapore. Watch this Bandcamp space.

Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Ann-Sophie Douet. “After discovering the musical Starmania and then Barbra Streisand, I naturally turned to classical singing. Pop music came next, and moving to Cambodia rekindled my desire to sing even more.” The winner of Acoustic Battle #5 last week is performing solo at The Tin Hat on Friday.
Do you have a pet musical hate?
I really struggle with reggae. I’ll make an exception for Alpha Blondy though — he defined one summer of my youth.
A private musical indulgence:
Powerhouse female singers, I confess.
The year you first came to Cambodia:
My family and I arrived in August 2024.
An early music memory:
The musical Starmania triggered that irresistible urge to grab a microphone.
The last thing you had to eat:
Dumplings… I love them!
Stagefright: yes or no?
Stagefright, of course! I’ve even blanked on songs I know by heart.
A country you want to visit:
Why limit myself to one country when all those around us are worth discovering? I’ll start with Cambodia — I haven’t explored it fully yet, and it’s so rich in surprises.
A book or movie you keep going back to:
Cyrano de Bergerac is THE movie! The writing is sublime and the acting brilliant. I’ve loved it for 35 years without ever getting tired of it.
What languages do you have?
I speak French and English, my German is getting rusty, and my Khmer is beginner level.
Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
My primary instrument is… my vocal cords! I really started using them at 13, after getting familiar with piano and violin.
Something people might be surprised to know about you:
Despite weighing only 58 kilos soaking wet, I handle animals that can weigh more than a ton (cows, horses).
You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
Hard to choose, but I’ll go with a Michael Jackson concert!
A question from the last participant: If you close your eyes and imagine yourself completely content and at peace — not excited or particularly happy, just serene — where do you see yourself? A fictional or real place, from your past or never seen before? Describe it. Is music involved?
My peaceful place is the sea, on a windsurf board at full speed! I sing all the time when I’m out on the water — it doubles the pleasure!
