Department of Free Jazz

A new green space/event has opened this year on Koh Nerea, next door to Koh Pich in Phnom Penh – Khmer StrEAT Food Festival and Night Market.  This weekend Above and Beyond Events present A&BE In The Park #1: Jazz In The Park, the first of a series of live music-related family-friendly events planned for the second Sunday of every month until the end of the year.

“Each month there will be two bands, the opening band The Melody followed by a guest band.  ” explains trumpter and Jazz Sauce bandleader Cameron Smith.   “Jazz Sauce gets the pleasure of playing the first event on August 10.  It looks really fun.  I’m really excited about the nice big stage and the beautiful big patch of grass, perfect for picnicking and running around barefoot – which I may do.  There will be lots of food and craft stalls and things like that.  And it’s free entry.”

Jazz Sauce has become a bit of a moveable feast of late,” he notes.  “For this event we have an augmented version.  I will be joined by Darvel on double bass, George and Joe on guitars, and Seanghai on alto sax, who has been coming along to George’s jazz jams at The Deck.

“I like the loose tightness of the New Orleans jazz we play, and I’m pleased that we can do this for a local family event – the US Air Force brass ensemble played on the riverside recently, and the crowd was swarming in with cameras, they’d never seen this kind of thing before.”

The Melody, followed by Jazz Sauce, kick off at around 6 pm this coming Sunday.

Department of Cambodian-related Releases

Now available on Bandcamp is a Cambodian song, Aprey Te Roub, by Osaka Music Lovers Band, a Japanese outfit led by Aya Urata Yamanouchi who spent many years in the music scene in Siem Reap.  Full version is here, and B side Dub version is a remix by Professor Kinski.  Also available on vinyl!
