1. Ernie Buck – Almond Eyes

Ernie: I was completely floored when I heard Almond Eyes was number one in the Radio Oun Top 100 Countdown! Humbled that the song connected with other people. After all, that’s the whole point, right? I was reminded of how far my family and I have come, since the day I wrote it, where I was when I recorded it. We could never have foreseen the ups and downs which lay ahead. A feeling of elation to be able to share the moment with my wife and son.

With family back in the UK listening in, too, and Whatsapping every few minutes, saying “Still haven’t heard any of your songs yet!” “Oh, this song’s great! Are they your friends, too?” They were even more excited than me! It was such a special way to spend the day. I was so proud to show off all my friends’ music to my folks. They were so impressed with the sheer volume of great music coming out of Cambodia. The station and our music community won a lot of new fans that day! It was the best New Year’s celebration of my life!

Almond Eyes and all of my music is available to download, for free, at Bandcamp. Plus all the streaming services, from Spotify to Tik Tok, Apple Music to Snapchat – and anywhere else you can conceive.

2. ZyctDan – Lazy Monday

ZyctDan:  It was a big surprise for me that my song   got the number 2 spot, I didn’t expect it so it’s a bit exciting. Big thanks to all those who voted for it. I got the inspiration for the song from Garfield who hates Mondays. You can check out my EP at Bandcamp. Again a big thank you to those who voted.

3. Joshua Chiang – A Friend For The End Of The World

Joshua:  I wrote A Friend For The End of The World when I was marooned in Singapore due to flight cancellations during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. There was a very strict lockdown happening at that time – no venturing outside of the house other than for essential activities, and I could not even meet my wife, who was staying in her parents’ place; I was staying with mine.

I briefly had a thought – what if this virus would be the one that could bring about the end of civilization as we know it? Well, wouldn’t that be funny? And before I know it, I was channeling my inner Jarvis Cocker and my knowledge of cult dystopian movies (ranging from the Living Dead series to Planet of The Apes) into a song about a tin-foil hat wearing social reject who is well-prepared for extinction-level events; all he needs is a companion to survive them.

All my recording gear were in Cambodia so I made do with what I had at hand – Garageband on my laptop a beat-up acoustic guitar (which I used as a bass as well by adding a virtual octave pedal to the track) and a melodica. I recorded the vocals on my mobile phone. The idea for the music video was pure Dylan (Bob, not Jacob). You can find the video here. The song has been re-recorded for my upcoming debut solo album complete with a REAL trumpet section in the last chorus. So keep a lookout for news of the album release, some time in March!
