The Leng Pleng Feature Article

Finding the tools: Summer Lee Carlson

Something different is percolating in Kampot.  Not a live show – not yet anyway – but a collaboration between singer/songwriter Summer Lee Carlson and Phnom Penh-based producer and beatmaker Khid Genius, Minneapolis musician Jason Peterson DeLaire, and graphic designer Markus Dixon, and you’ve got a creative team producing what is being pitched as a project combining talents and skills to make endless platters of ear candy.   The latest single, Disaster – “Shirley Bassey taking Cinderella out to the club and telling her to forget about being home by midnight” – drops on Friday 17 March.  Summer recently sat down with LengPleng to talk about the delights of creation and collaboration.

Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Kim Bugo.  Guitarist and occasional singer with Filipina group Mayari as well as performer around town in Phnom Penh for some years.

Do you have a pet musical hate?
Heavy autotune for vocals

A private musical indulgence:
I listen to progressive rock and obscene hip-hop/rap songs

The year you first came to Cambodia:
2013

An early music memory:
I still remember my three-year-old self gibberishly singing Miss You Like Crazy by Natalie Cole

The last thing you had to eat:
I just ate beef rendang!

A country you want to visit:
I want to watch a Broadway musical so I am keen to visit the UK and USA

A book or movie you keep going back to:
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

What languages do you have?
I speak the Filipino language Tagalog and English. I’ve recently joined Khmer classes so I’m proud to say “khnom niyeay Khmer tiktik”

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
I learned to play the guitar when I was in senior high school. Most of the time I play the guitar whilst singing when doing gigs

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
People get to be surprised that I sing because I don’t do it so often anymore

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
I’m not really into huge crowds but if I’m given a chance to attend a festival in the past probably it would be Coachella 2018 where they had Beyonce, St Vincent, LANY and Miguel in the lineup

A question from the last participant: If you hadn’t come to Cambodia, what do you think you would be doing now?
I would probably still be working in the finance sector back in Manila and I guess I would still be performing once in a while.
