Rod Tolentino.  The energetic guitarist and vocalist who you may have seen out the front of Siem Reap bands Jam-Cha, The Wildmen and/or ScapeGoat Candy, or perhaps Rage Jam, Kampot’s short-lived Rage Against the Machine tribute band.  His college band in the Philippines, Subscapular, released an EP in 2004, Testing the Daylight , and a full length album, We Are Kids Forever in 2013, and took part in the Pulp Summer Slam.   “Since I have moved to Cambodia, we have been working on some songs that we began writing before I left, 5 years ago, hopefully they will be released online soon!”   Before Cambodia he was also a member of GumbyDiesToday and Magdalena.  Catch ScapeGoat Candy at Pomme in Siem Reap on Saturday 25th.

Do you have a pet musical hate?
Not related to music, but I hate my gout arthritis attacks. LOL

A private musical indulgence:
I love indulging in ambient sounds but also really love hard-rock/metal stuff too. Deftones maybe is the closest. Noodling, metal riffing and guitar tone tweaking has always been my journey! And the magic of the 8 DOTTED delay guitar effect!

The year you first came to Cambodia:
February of 2014

An early music memory:
In the early days Subscapular played around Manila for exposure – that was fun! We were college students, didn’t have enough money for booze, so we brought our own and put it inside a brand covered plastic bottle discreetly. Before getting to the gig we were already tipsy drunk and didn’t have to pay for much booze at the venue!  Once we could sell our EP and album at the shows we could afford booze, yahoo!  Ooops – is that an early music memory or a booze memory? LOL

The last thing you had to eat:
HARIBO!!

A country you want to visit:
Japan, Greece, France.

A book or movie you keep going back to:
I’m a big fan of horror movies and I love Stephen King’s It.  The 1990 Tim Curry version was freaking scary when I was a kid.  I also really enjoy Titanic and The Lion King too!!

What languages do you have?
Tagalog and English

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
Guitars and drums. I got interested in drums at a young age because my uncle has a drum kit. When I was in high school my best friend taught me how to play guitar.

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
I love boardgames and the Magic The Gathering card game which I’ve been playing since I was 8 years old and still do now. We have a Magic The Gathering card game group here in Siem Reap too! Come join us if you want to learn how to play!

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
I would time travel to Nirvana’s Unplugged gig on MTV. And the infamous Woodstock 99!

A question for the next participant: in any sense, would you rather choose passion over money or vice versa?
I always choose passion over money, of course! But, if you can make money from your passion, why not? A good reward from your hard work will always be the best feeling!
