The LengPleng Feature Interview

Dynamic and delicate balancing of musics – the 20th International Music Festival Phnom Penh

This weekend the International Music Festival Phnom Penh celebrates its 20th anniversary, with four concerts over three days of performances at Raffles Le Royal.  Way back in the very different Cambodia of 2003, Artistic Director Anton Isselhadt had the audacity and vision to establish an annual festival of classical music concerts featuring international and local artists, with the aim of bringing together Western and Eastern cultural experiences.

Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Tennyson King is an award-winning nomadic indie folk musician from Hong Kong and Canada with a jovial stage personality. Pairing songs written in English, Mandarin and Cantonese with kick drum, electric and acoustic guitar, and Zhongruan (traditional Chinese guitar), he captivates audiences with reverberant, edgy sounds and humorous stories of life on the road. Indie folk rock infused with earthy roots, pop, and subtle psychedelic ear candy. Catch his one Phnom Penh show at Oscar’s on the Corner on Friday night.

Do you have a pet musical hate?
Not really, I try to love all elements of music and be as open as I can!

An early music memory:
My dad putting on classical albums while I would fall asleep

The last thing you had to eat:
Dim sum in Vancouver

Egypt

A book or movie you keep going back to:
Into the Wild

What languages do you have?
Cantonese, Chinese, English

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
My primary instrument now is guitar and I started when I was 17 years old

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
Red Hot Chilli Peppers at Hyde Park

A question from the last participant – Have you had a muse? Or more generally, how are you inspired?
