Seasons greetings,

To all those celebrating this weekend – and hey, there’s a lot to celebrate at present – LengPleng wishes you an enjoyable and safe time around the traps.

Tonight, Thursday, the weekend kicks off in style in Phnom Penh, with Geography of the Moon at Little Susie, Joe & the Jumping Jacks at Oscar’s on the Corner, and regular weekly gigs as diverse as Elephant Bar Follies with Phil Javelle & Friends, Havana Nice at Sora Sky Bar, Alli G at HClub and the Cloud open mic.

For those pursuing Christmas eve action on Friday evening there’s a host of events.  An Australian community gathering tradition, Carols by Candlelight, kicks off at 5 pm at Odom Gardens, Le Moon Rooftop offer Chor Yee, Ros Chancinith and Summer Lee Carlson, and Cloud has a loud Christmas Madness night with Rose, Doch Chkae, As The Heart Betrays and Stiff Little Punks.  It’s old time 60s Khmer rock at Duplex with Miss Sarawan and K’n’E, and The Extraordinary Chambers are late at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Kampot, The Schkoots land at DeliCious for a Christmas Eve show.

On Saturday, Christmas Day is somewhat quieter – highlights include Aguita E’Coco at Duplex, K’n’E at Oscar’s on the Corner, and Those Handsome Devils at The Harbour in Siem Reap.

LengPleng is doing its best to discover all the live music events coming up for International New Year’s Eve next Friday, there’s already a list to choose from at the bottom of the gig guide.

Patchy cloud with some blue skies: 2021 in review from the vantage point of LengPleng Towers

In 2020 we appeared to have been spared the worst of the pandemic, and Phnom Penh was the live music capital of the world, with Siem Reap a creditable second, and Kampot not doing too bad either.  We kicked off 2021 with eight weeks of business-as-usual: while international traffic was at a standstill, January and February saw mini-tours around the country by Phnom Penh-based Blue Wave and Siem Reap acts Dean Wolf Bailey and Son Sabor Trio, and short visits to Kampot by the likes of Two Jacks, Little Thieves, Boxchords and The Sock Essentials.  Not to mention two Original SessionsJeff Baker and Mirasol & Arone shared a bill which included live painting (while singing), and Pisey Oum and Clara Shandler.   Then our world too got quiet.
