Also coming through next month are Australian band Del Webb Explosion (formerly known as PlanB), playing in Siem Reap on Friday 20 at Sojourner House [fundraiser for Jayavarman VII Hospital], in Phnom Penh on Saturday 21 at Oscar’s on the Corner and Sunday 22 at Motodop, in Kampot on Thursday 26 at Madi Bar and Friday 27 at Kampot River Nest and winding up on Saturday 28 at ArtBar in Kep.

For the festival-minded, Dave Fest 3.0 comes to Mpai Bai Bay on Koh Rong Sanloem from Saturday 21 to Wednesday 25 November, featuring a long list of live bands, solo performers, shows, activities and DJs.  Check out further details at davefestcambodia.com.

Department of New Video Releases

Adam Marsland has been busy putting together his version of Mouy Meun Alai, a Cambodian standard by Sinn Sisamuth, in Khmer, with an accompanying video, now available on YouTube.  “If I’m not the very first non-Cambodian to ever sing this song, I’m certainly one of the first”, says Adam.  “It’s extremely rare for non-native speakers to learn more than one or two local songs, because the technical difficulty of the singing and the language make it a bit of a fool’s errand.  However, I am a well-known fool who likes a challenge.”

The video was shot in Phnom Penh, and features familiar landmarks including the Royal Palace, some backstreets, and local record emporium Space Four Zero.  No AI or autotune was used.

“Sinn Sisamuth is the real deal, and trying to sing in his shoes in his language is an audacious thing to do. As a foreigner singing in a difficult lingo, it’s very hard to tell whether I’m closer to ABBA or Shonen Knife. But based on the reactions from Khmer audiences so far, it seems to fly.”

Also released this week was an imaginative new video for the Ariane Parkes song The Sound of Dragonfly Wings, created by Bjorn Leonhard.
