Passing Chords:  a few things you might not know about…

Pervez Gulzar.  Pervez has played percussion with a variety of combos in Phnom Penh over the past few years, notably Boxchords and PRERNA.  Find him on Friday night at Bosporus with new trio Crossing Roads, playing “original songs in French, a musical voyage with notes of reggae, ska, sounds of the tropics and African rhythms.”

Do you have a pet musical hate?
During my childhood I had a dog that loved music.  Whenever I banged on my tablas he started to wave his tail, but I hated when he would grab my tabla hammer

A private musical indulgence:
Playing percussion with like-minded musicians is actually a musical indulgence which allows me to get involved with fusion-type music

The year you first came to Cambodia:
I came in Cambodia on March 2009

An early music memory:
I grew up in a Christian family where everyone must follow the Christian values. I started playing tablas in family church gatherings where tablas and harmonium are the prime instruments. I used to watch my cousin plays tablas, which motivated me to get into tablas, all the different rhythms. I used to listen lots of Sufi music and my favorite singer was the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a legend of Kawali and Sufi music. I loved pop music as well – Fusion was one of my favorite Pakistani pop music bands, Whenever they performed live I tried to watch their shows, which inspired me that I could perform in front of an audience like them. When I came to Cambodia I did not have tablas, but I couldn’t find a shop to sell tablas, so shifted my skills to use the cajon, bongos, darbuka and electric drum pad as a fusion instruments in order to produce some sort of west/east rhythms.  And it went well

The last thing you had to eat:
Chicken Biryani

A country you want to visit:
There are couple of countries that I want to visit such as Japan, Korea, Switzerland and Canada

A book or movie you keep going back to:
Movie : 3 Idiots (an Indian movie)
Book : Line-of-Fire by Pervez Musharruf

What languages can you speak?
Urdu, Punjabi, basic Khmer and English

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
Tabla is my primary instrument and I started playing at the age of 15

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
I am a cricketer and a good chef

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past.  What do you choose?
I would go to any possible gig with great music!

A question from the last participant: Have you ever met anyone famous?  If so, who and under what circumstances?
I wish I could meet a famous celebrity but it has never happened so far
