On Saturday The Deck hosts an Anti-Valentines evening with Adam Marsland, while The Blue Souls introduce The Velvet Compromise at MotodopRitchy & Phil are on a Kanika Boat cruise, while Billy Page is at Botanico and Lue Thy & Scoddy are at Rust Bar deep in Bassac Lane.  Poca plays up a Latin Valentine at Au Marche, while Mourin Terry is at Distortion Dive Bar, Kimberly Bugo is at Samai Rum Distillery and it’s open Mike at Stories by Little SusieTropico celebrate their second anniversary with Two Country Drunks and Soselo Summer are at Noisy Chili.  Later, The Screaming Riels are at Oscar’s on the Corner [see Passing Chords with lead singer Garry Eyles from the archive below].  On the coast, La Union are at The Wave: Kep West, Kampot Playboys are at Madi Bar and Bamboo Train are at The Bay.  In Siem Reap, Paul Mackie is at The Pizza Garden and new outfit Skip a Beat are at Laundry.

Honesty and riffs – the first steps of The Velvet Compromise

For once the rumour mill has been correct.  Summer Lee Carlson and Frank Scarfone have been collaborating on writing songs, and have set up an outfit The Velvet Compromise, using The Blue Souls as a backing band.  LengPleng sat down with them to get the full story.

LP:     How did the two of you come to start working together?

Summer:     It was by accident, actually.  We met to have just coffee one day, talking about me singing with The Blue Souls, and then we decided to go and have a jam.  Frank started playing a riff, and I started singing, and we wrote an entire song in a couple of hours.  Oh, that just happened!  And that was in April.  Then Frank went to Italy for three months.

How jazz always grew – Dr George and The Deck’s Thursday night jam

Is jazz back from wherever it went? It’s been growing, not so slowly and not so quietly, at The Deck through the latter part of 2025, through a jam session hosted by (Dr) George Hess.  LengPleng sat down with Dr George and owner of The Deck Thomas Moodie, to talk jazz and jamming.

George: It’s growing. The last three weeks have been amazing. It’s just been packed. And it’s become a hot-spot, people are hanging around all night.

Thomas: Which I’m obviously pretty keen for. Having an environment where people can go into and be welcomed with open arms.

Australian rock veteran Garry Eyles is in Phnom Penh this weekend at Oscar’s on the Corner, fronting The Screaming Riels (the backing band is Siem Reap powerhouse JamCha).  Back in January 2023 he took part in LengPleng’s Passing Chords.

A question from the last participant: what is the wildest gig you have ever played?
Support for the Painters and Dockers in Australia. Their lead singer was on stage naked.
