Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Todd Anderson.  Todd is an Australian bassist and guitarist playing the local venues in various Phnom Penh-based bands. After growing up in numerous metal, ska, and pub rock bands back home, he got his start in the Phnom Penh music scene in 2010 playing for the infamous cringe rock band The Choppers. Since 2011, he has been the bassist for The Lazy Drunks, who play an eclectic mix of rock and funk covers from the 70s to the 2010s.  He also plays bass with original jazz-funk indie band Smack the Unicorn. To shake things up a bit, he plays guitar in the punk rock and ska cover band Shake 79 who are performing on Friday night at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Do you have a pet musical hate?

I really can’t stand some of the insipid and overproduced music being churned out these days. I like real vibrating skins and strings in music with lyrics with some depth and meaning.

A private musical indulgence:

I probably listen to more death metal than I should, but I’ve learned not to put it on while with company.

The year you first came to Cambodia:

I first started coming here as a tourist in 2006, but I didn’t officially move here until 2009.

An early music memory:

When I was twelve or thirteen, my music teacher at school grabbed me by the neck and through a gritted-teeth snarl told me that I didn’t have a musical bone in my body. I guess I have been trying to prove him wrong ever since.

The last thing you had to eat:

Just ate some cucumber because it’s all there was in the fridge that didn’t require cooking.

A country you want to visit:

Belize is top of my list at the moment. I tried to get there in July, but Hurricane Beryl left me stranded in Cancun.

A book or movie you keep going back to:

There are a bunch of books and movies that I keep coming back to. For books it’s Pillars of the Earth, American Psycho, IT, Perfume and River God. The movies that get a steady rotation are Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas and American Beauty.

What languages do you have?

I can speak English, Khmer, a bit of Spanish, and a speck of Thai.

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:

I can’t say whether bass or guitar is my primary instrument, but I started playing guitar in about 1995, and then picked up the bass in 2011 when The Lazy Drunks needed a new bassist.

Something people might be surprised to know about you:

I’m a single dad with two wonderful sons aged 12 and 10.

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?

Tough question. Although there are the obvious festivals and gigs from last century, I’d have to go with Soundwave in 2012 because, pound for pound, it had the most top tier bands there.

A question from the last participant – Who are your musical heroes?

That’s a very long list. But some of my most noteworthy heroes would include Sublime, Vulfpeck, Steely Dan, Nirvana, Leonard Cohen, Mr Bungle, The Beatles, Pantera, 2pac, Amy Winehouse, Gojira, Flea, Stuart Zender, Ryan Martinie, Joe Dart……….. But it would be remiss of me to not mention some of my local heroes who play alongside me: Tom, Stewie, Matt, Jesse, Bandi, Will, Adam and Andy.
