Saturday night is the sort of smorgasbord we expect from music in Cambodia.  Starting with Josh Chiang & Zytdan at Coconut Park, moving to Arome Khmer at Craft and Gareth Bawden & Pervez Gulzar at Seekers Spirits. Funky Chicken return to Back Street Bar and The Broken Cymbal are at Perch. Double the dancing and double the fun with Los Primos – early at Bouchon Wine Bar and late at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap Alli G & The Quilas play Star Bar and Spiked Gravy grace Laundry. and Graham Cain is at Kep Natural.

Come Sunday and in a more classical mode, there is a (ticketed) piano recital by Lee Jae Phang at Raffles Le Royal.  And looking forward to next Tuesday, find jazz pianist John X Paul at Sunset Boulevard and Intan, Gaby & Mikhail at Le Manolis.

Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Cesar Toni.  The Siem Reap based drummer has been working professionally in music since 1989, firstly in Brazil, playing in bars, teaching, recording and touring.  In 2003 he put together a band and went to play in the casinos of Macau, then toured around Asia with different acts, finally settling in Cambodia in 2017.  In Siem Reap he’s been seen in the past with such outfits as Cambojam, Soul Gypsies, Rockfellas, Jesus & the Russian Mafia, X Rays, Los Pollos Hermanos, Play with Fire and Alpaca Lips. His current active bands are Those Handsome Devils, Electric Soup, BoHo Project, Vampirates and Los Primos. Catch him in Phnom Penh this weekend on Friday at Botanico@Odom Garden in duo with Poca de Feo, then later on Friday at Duplex  with the augmented four-piece Los Primos, and then both Bouchon Wine Bar (early) and Oscar’s on the Corner (late) on Saturday.

Do you have a pet musical hate?
Arrogant musicians.

A private musical indulgence:
Always support others, if there’s a true intention in what their doing.

The year you first came to Cambodia:
2015.

An early music memory:
Imitating the voices of singers from the radio at 6, 7 years old.

The last thing you had to eat:
Just rice – homemade, a Brazilian recipe

A country you want to visit:
Macau (again).

A book or movie you keep going back to:
The good, the bad and the ugly.

What languages do you have?
Portuguese, Spanish, English.

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
Piano, guitar, 6 or 7 years of age.

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
For many years I have studied paranormal subjects more than music.

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
Elvis Presley in Las Vegas, 1970, That’s the way it is

A question from the last participant, Damani: if a brick didn’t know how to sit on walls no more, what would you ask it?
Did you try to ‘stand up’ and be with bricks same as you?
