Greetings:

Farewells come and go in the Kingdom of Wonder – this weekend we’re saying goodbye to Soselo Summer (interviewed here in May).  Find them on Friday night with Radioactive Deathmonkey at The Tin Hat and on Saturday with Maozi and Friends and Bustaka Boys at The Deck.  It is, however, unlikely that we have seen the last of the many individuals in the band – expect many offshoot projects in the near future.

In Phnom Penh on Friday night, Big D Walker is at Sra’Art Wine Bar and Issei Sakano & Katy Lo Wing play works for piano four hands at Green Pepper.  Hugo Marcellesi is at Craft, Dave Zdriluk and Stu Cottom share the bill at Tacos Kokopelli and Danny Healy Gypsy 3 are at Botanico.   Also find Vanno at The Velvet Room and Alli G Rockustic at CloudThe Extraordinary Chambers play late at Oscar’s on the Corner .

Saturday night in Phnom Penh Miss Sarawan is at Lantern, D&Y are at Botanico and Samphors & Bunly are at The Velvet Room.  Antonio & the Playful Minds are at Sundance and the Khmer Blind Band are at Boran House.  Later on The Lazy Drunks return to Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap Harry’s & The Welsh Consulate host Gerard Evans, while Jam-Cha are at Laundry.

Come Sunday, Scott Bywater and Marianna Hensley are Villa Grange, Frank Scarfone & Felix McFadden are at The Vine and the Sunday Sundowners open mic continues at Tacos Kokopelli.  Later on Back Street Bar presents original songs from Lewis McTie, Thomas Dallan and Joe Wrigley and later still The Lark are at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Thomas Dallan.  Bass player in demand in Phnom Penh – currently with Alli G & TheQuilas/Rockustic and The Visa Runners.  He will be showcasing his own songs as part of the Living Room Sessions at Back Street Bar on Sunday evening with Lewis and Joe.

Do you have a pet musical hate?
I don’t really have a pet musical hate, I am always interested to see what different people can bring to the table. One thing that annoys me is if time gets wasted by band members arguing while at a rehearsal. Those discussions can happen later through a chat thread, instead of wasting valuable jamming time.

A private musical indulgence:
I love listening to reggae – I mean real authentic reggae where I have trouble understanding what they are saying. I also love the blues. I grew up with a lot of blues records being played in my house. I believe there are many connections between reggae and blues, and many connections between them and I.

The year you first came to Cambodia:
I first came to Cambodia in December of 2021. I left Canada in October and had spent two months in Thailand before entering Cambodia.

An early music memory:
A music memory that will always stay with me was the first day of music class in grade 7. It was the first grade where we had instruments and students could choose from a variety of instruments making up the whole concert band. The teacher set up all the students with their instruments and showed them all one note. When instructed, all of us played our note at the same time and the swell of sound filled the room and gave me chills. I was hooked.

The last thing you had to eat:
The last thing i had to eat was a pork fried rice and a fried vermicelli noodle dish. I like to eat a lot of the local food, but every once in a while I still get a pizza or a burger.

A country you want to visit:
I would love to visit Japan. I actually had plans to go back in 2020 but then COVID happened and I had to cancel them. The culture and especially the food really interest me there. I would also love to see the music scene in Tokyo. The ramen there must be out of this world!

A book or movie you keep going back to:
My favourite movie I always find myself quoting is Dumb and Dumber. It’s one of the funniest movies ever made and I never get sick of watching it. I often find ways  to respond to people in conversation using quotes from that movie. If they recognize it from the movie, it usually is a good laugh.

What languages do you have?
I only know English. I am from Canada so we learn French in school for a few years growing up. Unfortunately none of us use it or keep up with it so I cannot speak it fluently.

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:

My instrument is the bass guitar. It’s what I started with in grade 7. I actually went into that year all excited to play drums, but too many of us wanted drums. I would always tap and bang rhythmically on things. However, they ended up giving me the bass because my dad had an amp at home which meant I could practice. I excelled at it quickly and I gel very well with drummers because I believe I still think like one.

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
Something people might not know about me is that I’m a YouTuber. My channel is called Tom Trips Out. I talk about life in Cambodia, as well as how to come here to teach English. Subscribe to my channel, I am constantly posting new content.

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
I would love to go back and see a Bob Marley concert in a place that’s not too big, so it’s intimate and the vibes are just right. I get chills just thinking about how inspiring that would be.

A question from the last participant – what do I think of NATO?
I’ll be perfectly honest, I’m not really involved in world politics or keep up with it. I tend to live in the moment. From my limited knowledge I believe NATO is a good thing and they have the best interests of our planet in mind.
