Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Danny Healy.   The new-to-town saxophonist (already seen with Intan & Friends, Los Primos and others) learnt his craft while training at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia. He has a wide range of musical influences from Dexter Gordon to Stravinsky and is both a dedicated instrumentalist and composer. A nomadic multi-woodwind instrumentalist, he has spent the majority of the last two decades living and working abroad as a musician in places such as: China, Vietnam, Armenia, Georgia, Russia and the UK – to name a few. During 2022 he spent the majority of the year as Composer and Performer-in-residence, compiling and performing compositions for his BY HAND Project at the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, Tasmania.  Danny will be playing tonight at The Confidential and through the weekend – and weeks to come – at various primarily jazz events.

Do you have a pet musical hate?
I’m a cranky old man, I have many. I guess arrongant musicians (particularly unsubstantiated). Music is a gift to humanity, only a game and a hobby. It was never meant to be a job and we are blessed if it is, we should count our blessings not stroke our egos.

A private musical indulgence:
I’m a compulsive practicer, it keeps me mildly sane and I overindulge in my own little world.

The year you first came to Cambodia:
I arrived in Cambodia a few months back having never set foot in the country before.

An early music memory:
I remember watching Sesame Street as a young child when they were in a saxophone factory and I knew I wanted one.

The last thing you had to eat:
The wife and I went out for Thai food tonight and I had Pad See Ew, twas really quite lovely.

A country you want to visit:
I have been fortunate enough to live in many countries throughout my life and there are many more I wish to visit. I guess Iran would be very high on my extensive list.

A book or movie you keep going back to:
Zen And The Art Of Archery seems to have a special place in my mind and heart.

What languages do you have?
English (barely) and minimal Mandarin that seems to be much better after alcohol.

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
I’m a saxophonist that aspires to be a clarinetist. I started music at the age of 12 (31 years ago) and was assisted greatly in music by a family friend.

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
Not much I guess… I’m an avid composer and due to being hired as an artist in residence I wrote 740 tunes over a 7 month period last year.

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
I’m really such a jazz nerd. I’d realistically take myself back to the 1940’s in New York and soak up music every night. Lester Young being super high on the list of ‘must sees’.

A question from the last participant – what’s your favorite thing to do in Cambodia?
Taking my wife to breakfast every morning on her way to work. Cambodians are some of the nicest, most accepting people I’ve met. There are numerous locals who wave or speak to us regularly on our walking route despite our lack of language skills.
