Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Miserable Man / Filippo Masé.   A one-man-band project born in the UK in 2010, playing guitars, bass, vocals, live loops and mouth trumpet.  He has played in Europe, India and Southeast Asia, and released four albums, two EPs and a bunch of singles; he is currently working on a new travel-themed album which should be ready next year.  You can catch Miserable Man on the coast this week at Kep Natural on Saturday, Kep West on Sunday, Tiki Garden on Monday and Karma Traders on Tuesday; next weekend he’s in Siem Reap before returning for shows in Phnom Penh.

Do you have a pet musical hate/pet peeve?
I hate Bono, joyless cover bands and singers with iPads on stage (unless professional Philipino bands).  Also ultra technical TikTok musicians.

A private musical indulgence:
Bill Evans, whatever he did.  Jazz for the working man.  I love Peace Piece.

The year you first came to Cambodia:
December 2012.  In case the Mayans were right – I wanted to die at Angkor Wat.

An early music memory:
Probably Dire Straits guitar licks and sound in my father’s car radio.

The last thing you had to eat:
Basil pork rice with a fried egg.

A country you want to visit:
Japan.

A book or movie you keep going back to:
I normally do movies and books once, but once a year I go back to both Carmelo Bene interviews on the Maurizio Costanzo Show.  Either the biggest genius of theatre or the biggest fraud ever.

What languages do you have?
I’m Italian and I love speaking my Venetian dialect (which is technically a language).  I use English, can get by in French and Spanish.  I’ve practised Hindi since 2004 and mess around with very basic Bahasa Indonesia.

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
I mainly write and perform on guitar although bass is my secret love.  I started playing church songs and Metallica riffs on an old classical guitar when I was 14.

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
I almost never play music in my spare time (unless I’m jamming on bass/cajon with other people) but I devote quite a bit of time to photography, gardening and cooking.

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
I would love to see Tom Waits live, and maybe Police mid-career.

A question from the last participant: How do you think AI is currently influencing the creative process for musicians(negative or positive) and will this trend continue into the future?
AI is scary, funny, exciting and pathetic all at the same time. Hopefully we will be able to organically incorporate it in music without making everything sound like crap.  If not – goodbye, it’s been great to be a dinosaur.
