Department of Explanations
Our readers may be aware that changes are afoot at a couple of Tuol Tom Pong venues. Live music has unfortunately been curtailed at The Deck, but Dr Hess’s Thursday jazz jam will continue at House of Jazz and More, which has changed ownership. Watch this space for more details on the future directions and indeed the new name of the House of Jazz and More.

Also perhaps requiring explanation is the Songwriters Circle being held every Monday evening at Little Susie. Host Scott Bywater says: “It’s an informal evening that operates like a more chatty version of an open mic. Songwriters are encouraged to come along with a few songs that they can also talk about, to discuss the writing process, their choices, tricks and tips, in front of a listening audience. Not a workshop or a lesson; a night for those interested in songwriting from either side of the table.” Look out for the Bob Dylan special on Monday 25 May.

Department of New Releases
Geneva-based former Phnom Penh mover-and-shaker Roxanne Dumont’s outfit Roshani, fresh from a tour of China, have released a new video, Roxstar, featuring Spiderman, two horses, some spaghetti, an apricot Strat and a cast of dozens.
Former long-time Phnom Penh resident and music producer Professor Kinski (Jan Meuller) has released a new video, Blaue Augen (Blue Eyes), by Bjela P.
The LengPleng Feature Article
Letter from Japan by guest writer Troy Campbell
Drummer and artist Troy reports in on his travels around Japan connecting with Phnom Penhers past and present.
“Crowded. So, so crazy crowded. I am at JR Takashiyama, a 10 story shopping mall that is part of the labyrinthine Nagoya Train Station complex. I landed on the shores of Nagoya, Japan a few months ago, propelled by the Japanese community in BKK1, their encouragement and an awful lot of sake. I am in the crowded retail maze of JR Takashiyama at a food fair looking for one member of that community, Hironobu Kurata, a very kind Japanese man I met at the Kichi Sake Bar in Phnom Penh. He is a pepper grower in Cambodia, one who helped resuscitate Kampot pepper years ago. He is a Nagoya native and is here in his hometown to sell his Kurata pepper, grown in Koh Kong.”
