Greetings:

Welcome to another weekend in Cambodia where there really does seem to be something for everybody.

In Phnom Penh on Thursday night We Are Ewe sneak in a cheeky farewell set at Motodop, followed by Mekong Caliente.  Elsewhere there’s the regular jazz jam with Dr George at Tape Deck, and open mics at Tropico and Noisy Chili.  Later on, The Extraordinary Chambers are at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Friday in Phnom Penh finds Checkered Past at Motodop, Ethereal Journey at Hunt, Brooke Palmer at Botanico, The Broken Cymbal at Khmer Funk Sky Bar, Scott Bywater at The Vine and Aaron at The Tin Hat.  Later and louder, LoveMe2Time: A Doors Experience are followed by The Extraordinary Chambers at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap Mongoose are at The Panthers Hut.

On Saturday Cove Aaronoff & the Belongers are at Tape Deck – [note all tickets sold] and Bassac Brass Quintet are at Hops Tuol Kork.  The Ivory Express and guests (who include Mirasol Aguila, Ariane Parkes, Will Nygren and John Ryan) present an evening celebrating the songs of Elton John at Motodop.  There’s also Blues Generations: Colin & Sammy at Botanico, The Gentle Three (Mara, Raph and Phil) at Au Marche and The Duo Tone at Tropico.  A big night for the metal heads at Noisy Chili with Slam City IV (see below).  Later on, Space Jam (Gaby, Chema, Raph and Damani) funk it up at Oscar’s on the Corner.  On the coast, Coco Funk are at The Wave: Kep West and Miss Sarawan reopens The Bay in Kampot.

Come Sunday, Musica Felica choir hold a charity concert at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, while Gaby & Chema are at The Vine and Scott Bywater hosts the Sunday Sundowners open mic at Tacos Kokopelli.  Greg Beshers is at Hunt, Brett Perkins is at Cloud, and later on Shaken Spirit are at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Department of Loud

Cambodia’s only annual metal and punk festival Slam City Asia will be hosting Slam City IV on Saturday in Phnom Penh, featuring Fang (USA), Round Eye 上海 (CHN) and awesome local acts Jōhatsu, After God, Soselo Summer & Mazama live at Noisy Chili.  Tickets are sold at the door for 40k riel / US$10 and there will be drinks, food and merch available for sale.   Check out the event page for more details, and the promo reel for more excitement.

And that’s not all the metal we’ve got this week – looking forward to Wednesday Nightmare A.D. will open for German metal band Casket at Oscar’s on the Corner.  Note 8 pm start and 10,000R / $2.50 entry.

The LengPleng Interview

Joyful meetings met – Cove Aaronoff’s solo album and new backing band The Belongers

This Saturday evening Cove Aaronoff and The Belongers unveil songs from Cove’s new solo album, To Meet and Be Met (to be released early next year) at a sold out show at Tape Deck.  LengPleng had some questions, such as: whither Japan Guitar Shop?  Cove and guitarist/producer Greg Beshers were good enough to sit down for a chat.

CA:  Japan Guitar Shop is alive and well.  We just played Motodop, we’re playing Dave Fest on Koh Rong Samloem next month, we just got booked for a big show in January, and we’re in the middle of recording a new EP.  And we’re hoping to tour in Mexico next summer.   But this project started a little while back when a lot of the band were busy.
