A big night for a jam in Phnom Penh on Thursday with the regular jazz jam with Dr George at Tape Deck, a one-off open mic with Alli G at Big Wig and the return of the open mic at Noisy Chili.  [Note our new stand-alone page for open mics and jams in Phnom Penh, Kampot and Siem Reap.] Later on, The Extraordinary Chambers are at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Friday in Phnom Penh, Jazz Sauce are at Motodop, Terry Magson is at The Tin Hat, Cardboard Lo-Fi are at The Vine, party band Pocket Change are at Chew & Bash, solo singer/guitarist Pu Toy is at End of the Road and Jair Coelho brings his Brazlian rhythms and tunes to Little Susie.  Later Montra are at Oscar’s on the Corner.

In Kampot on Friday, celebrate Chiet’s birthday at Madi Bar with Vy Nget, and in Siem Reap Sam Rocker continues the Lost and Found tour at Atlantis, Cesar, Pepe & Stephane are at Backwood.  [Note our new stand-alone pages for Siem Reap / Battambang gigs and Kampot / Kep / Islands gigs.]

On Saturday in Phnom Penh, Tamarinda perform for a Scott Bywater book launch and poetry reading at Tape Deck, and a piano and tenor Journey with Songs with Ki Yong RYU and Kwan Shik LEE can be found at Sun And Moon.  JamCha are followed by Drunk on Champagne at Motodop, Terry Magson is at Botanico, and Mirasol joins Cornerstone at Hard Rock Café Phnom Penh for a Guns’n’Roses and Metallica tribute.    Intan & Phil are at Metropole Underground, Punch Drunk are at Noisy Chili, Phnom Penh Cowboys are at Tropico, Caravan (with Alli, Perzev & Sheery) are at Duplex, and Crash Boom Bang are at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap, Mex’d Up celebrate their 3rd anniversary party with Dos Sifones and One Year Visa, and Cesar Toni Trio are at Backwood.

Come Sunday, Earth Tones Recorder Quartet [see our featured interview] are at Meta House, while Motodop hosts The Sound of Magic: A Disney Celebration with Intan, Phil, Gaby and Darvel.  Elsewhere, Rod & Chema are at The Vine, Scott Bywater hosts the Sunday Sundowners open mic at Tacos Kokopelli, and Greg Beshers is at Hunt.  The latest season of the Classical Series returns to Raffles Le Royal with a piano recital by Kenneth Hamilton with works by Chopin and Liszt, and later and louder Shaken Spirit are at Oscar’s on the Corner.

A matter of public recorder: the origin story of the Earth Tones Recorder Quartet

One of Phnom Penh’s great musical strengths is the sheer breadth of different styles that can be found – on the fringes, perhaps, but all it takes is paying attention.  This Sunday at Meta House you can witness the debut performance of Earth Tones Recorder Quartet, featuring Katy, Sharon, Irina and Sarah.  LengPleng sat down with band leader and bass recorder player Katy Lo Wing this week to see what’s going on.

KLW:  I did a Nerd Night presentation on the recorder recently and I started by talking about the confusing name.  The instrument was named that 400, 500 years before any sound recording machine was invented.  [The English name draws on the idea of a memoriser or repeater, as it was portable, easy to play, and good for passing on tunes.]  Other languages use different words, often calling it a kind of flute, a sweet flute or a block flute.  It’s a question that people ask – how does it compare to a flute?
