Greetings:

Get things started early this weekend in Phnom Penh with The Busking Kings at Front Bar , while The Broken Cymbal are at Botanico, The Ghost Boosters are at Bouchon Wine Bar and Lantern hosts a tango night with Poca de Feo.  Later and louder, catch The Extraordinary Chambers at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap, Sokunthea & Friends Jazz Quartet are at Villa D and Andy Luna is at Pasta La Vista.

On Friday in Phnom Penh the live music programme returns to Botanico@Odom Garden with Gareth Bawden, while Boxchords play Craft, Intan Andriana & Friends jazz on at Le Vin and Pedro is at Sra’Art Studio.  Later, Geography of the Moon are at The Box Office, Aguita e Coco are back at Duplex and The Broken Cymbal are at La Petanque.  Coming on early at Oscar’s on the Corner are The Two Jacks, with house band K’n’E to follow.   In Kampot, Jampot open mic at Karma Traders is hosted by Roberto Salgado.

Come Saturday, in Phnom Penh there’s Latin with Kayron & Liz at Palace Gate Hotel, pop with Kiss Bang Bong at Seekers Spirit House and Cambodian classics with Arome Khmer at Craft.  Find Americana with Joe Wrigley & Marianna Hensley at Botanico and Australian singer-songwriter Steve Saxton at The Welsh Consulate TTP.  For something louder, you can find Geography of the Moon at Back Street Bar, and blender play a special for Will’s birthday, with K’n’E to follow, at Oscar’s on the Corner.   In Siem Reap JamCha are at Star Bar.

There’s a significant milestone this Sunday – the longest running open mic in Phnom Penh, the Sunday Sundowners is celebrating its ninth anniversary at Tacos Kokopelli.   Established by Scott Bywater in 2013, with periods under the stewardship of Joe Wrigley, the Sundowners has long been a launch pad for new musicians arriving in town and remains as strong as ever.  Performers taking part this weekend will receive free chilli; special guests are expected.  Note hours are extended – for one time only – 5 pm to 9 pm.

Looking ahead to next week, band-to-watch 4Riel are playing at Karma Traders in Kampot.

What we’re getting excited about this week

A couple of months ago Jet Odrerir – Phnom Penh scene veteran and current resident of Austin, Texas – came to town to do some recording with Euan Gray at The Sound Initiative, roping in Joe & the Jumping Jacks, Marianna Hensley, Mol Vibol and James Speck to fill out the sound.  The results have now been released and the mini-album is now available at BandcampI shouldn’t have said nothing is a rambunctious, lighthearted and sometimes sardonic collection of world-weary songs that fall approximately in the country zone – highly recommended.

CÚT LỘN out of Ho Chi Minh City tear it up at Oscar’s on the Corner on Saturday, 13 August, 2022 – an exciting return to having touring bands come through Cambodia.
