Friday night in Phnom Penh, Pepper Jam II (Issei Sakano, Keiko Kitamura & Colin Grafton) are at Green Pepper, while Arome Khmer are at Craft and Scott Bywater is at Botanico.   Later Green Leaf Motif open up for Temple Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap, Salazar Quartet are at Villa D and The Welsh Consulate host an open mic.

On Saturday in Phnom Penh DORE are at Botanico, Ysabel is at Little Susie and DK Express are at SundanceThe Deck are putting on a hip hop night with Matsumara Fishworks, PRE and Big Daddy Klang, while you can find Peter at Mayazon, Sister Srey at Rosewood and Alli G/Rockoustic at Cloud.  Stu Cottom opens for Temple at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Kampot The Kampot Playboys and Chris Garcia are at Meraki and Low Season Riders are at The Bay.  In Battambang, the finale of the S’Art Urban Art Festival features The Blue Souls Quintet.

Come Sunday in Phnom Penh, Jive Buddies are at Villa Grange, Stu Cottom is at Bar Oz and the long-running Sunday Sundowners open mic at Tacos Kokopelli features guest host David ZdrilukThe Originals acoustic sessions at Back Street Bar this week features Lewis McTie, Scott Bywater and The Fallen Apples (Mirasol & Gaby), and later on Sunday Lark make their debut at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap, The Blue Strangers are at New Leaf.

For the love of song – Cove Aaronoff

Cove Aaronoff, of Phnom Penh-based originals band Japan Guitar Shop, has long had a great reputation as a fine singer and songwriter, and is starting to do solo gigs now as well.  It was, indeed, high time that LengPleng got him to sit down and talk JGS and songs.

Normally a solo act later forms a band and then returns to being a solo act intermittently when it becomes harder to get the whole band together to rehearse or play.  You’ve gone the other way, you suddenly appeared with Japan Guitar Shop and only after a couple of years started doing solo gigs. 

That’s due to Colin mainly, and Eugenio.  They had been playing together over a summer, just for the hell of it, with the notion of having a band.  One day Colin said to me hey, I’ve got a proposition for you – do you want to be the front man of a band?
