The Busking Kings, 5 pm, Billabong (Kampot)

Weekend highlights ***for full gig listings jump to the bottom***

Greetings:

If you’re heading for the islands for this holiday weekend, from Friday to Sunday on Koh Rong, Nest Beach Club present Nestival featuring Geography of the Moon, Japan Guitar Shop, The Visa Runners and a truckful of DJs – note it’s only DJs on the Friday.  As an added bonus,  Geography of the Moon play tonight at Runaways’.

On Friday in Phnom Penh, Three Country Drunks are at Craft, Platitudes play The Box Office, Arome Khmer are at Boran House and Graham Cain is at Duplex . Later and louder, Son Sabor Latin Trio are at Back Street Bar and K’n’E are at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap find Adam Marsland at Villa D, Rain at Pasta La Vista and Ms. Mikayla at AMBAR.

On Saturday it’s November Band at Craft, original Philipino music with Efren at Beer O’Clock and The Extraordinary Chambers at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap, Jam-Cha are at Laundry and Electric Soup are at Arin’s.

Laidback Sunday afternoon offerings include The Busking Kings at Villa Grange and the Sunday Sundowners open mic at Tacos Kokopelli (but with the kitchen closed – BYO food for the grill), while in Siem Reap Sokunthea Jazz Trio are at Villa D and Andy Luna is at La Bastide De Caro.

For the general listings below, particularly for residency gigs, it may be best to double-check with the venue that they will actually be open.

Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about ….

Steve Saxton.  Steve is a recent inductee into the Phnom Penh musical landscape, with a handful of solo gigs and now performances with new band Platitudes.  “Over the years in Australia I played in numerous original bands and as a solo artist. Early in the 1990s I won a competition called Triple J Unearthed. The prize was a high quality recording and high rotation airplay on the national youth broadcaster which at that time was a big deal. I travelled to Melbourne and enjoyed opportunities to play in great venues like the Espy [The Esplanade Hotel]. I lived in Mongolia for five years and in the first few years enjoyed playing in a covers band.”  Catch Platitudes at The Box Office on Friday evening from 7.30 pm.

Do you have a pet musical hate?
Playing popular covers.

A private musical indulgence:
Chris Browns Forever, a song the playlist my daughter and I would listen to when we spent hours driving for pick up and drop off time.

The year you first came to Cambodia:
I’m only newly arrived in Cambodia – I went into quarantine on 30th June 2021.

An early music memory:
My favorite early music memory was being taken to see the musical Godspell, and sitting right next to the band. It made a huge impression on me as a primary school child and when we got home I tried to play drums on the ironing board (it sounded like a snare to me.) I was not allowed to have a drum kit.

The last thing you had to eat:
Heinz spaghetti on toast, which is ok but a poor substitute for SPC!

A country you want to visit:
I want to visit Spain.

A book or movie you keep going back to:
I rewatch the original Star Wars movie from time to time as I was 10 when I saw it at the movies and it still fills me with awe and fires my imagination.

What languages do you have?
I can speak some Mongolian.

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
Guitar is really my only instrument.

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
I flew a helicopter as a trial instructional flight – given the money and opportunity I’d get my licence.

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past.  What do you choose?
Woodstock, but only if I could use my 20 year old body!

A question from the last participant: What’s your favorite Khmer song?
Cambodian Space Project’s version of I’m 16.
