Greetings:
Saturday night sees the last music event for Phnom Penh venue Sundance Inn & Saloon. After many years of business on St 172, Sundance is closing, with one last party – taking it out is the country music combo Hounds of Bakersfield.
On Friday in Phnom Penh, Metta Legita and Marianna Hensley are at Dina Gallery@Il Forno, while Antonio & the Playful Minds are at The Tin Hat and Vart Van is at Botanico. Cloud hosts a benefit night for injured staff member Dalin featuring Nightmare AD, Reign in Slumber and We Are Ewe, while a bumper night (note early start) at Oscar’s on the Corner features Green Leaf Motif, Frankie Teardrop Dead (see our feature article below) and then The Oscar Band.
On Saturday in Phnom Penh, there is a concert by the Phnom Penh Symphony Orchestra and the Phnom Penh Brass Ensemble at Phnom Penh University of the Arts Concert Hall. Cardboard Li-Fi are early at Mad Monkey, Danny Healy Swing 3 (early) and Vartey Ganiva (late) are at Botanico, while the Blue Souls Duo is at Lantern, Chor Yee & Lim are at Samai Rum Distillery and Antonio & the Playful Minds are at LOLA Music Lounge. Later, The Lazy Drunks are at Oscar’s on the Corner.
On Sunday find Miss Sarawan & Scoddy followed by Marianna Hensley at The Vine, the Sunday Sundowners open mic hosted by Mike McCann at Tacos Kokopelli, the return of Stu Cottom to Bar Oz, and The Original Sessions featuring Lewis McTighe & Lily Wimpory, Thomas Dallan and Joe Wrigley at Back Street Bar. Later in the evening Electric Muxu Orchestra are at Oscar’s on the Corner.
The LengPleng Interview
A Madchester vibe mixed with rock’n’roll – Frankie Teardrop Dead regroups
Ex-UK band Frankie Teardrop Dead first visited Cambodia as travellers in 2017, then came back to play music in 2018 as a four-piece and 2019 as a five-piece. Last year the band reverted to a duo and relocated from Manchester to Kampot (via Koh Rong Samloen), where they are now beginning to road test their new sound. In the midst of a series of Phnom Penh gigs (The Deck last Sunday, Back Street Bar tonight Wednesday, and Oscar’s on the Corner on Friday) arranged around a visa run, LengPleng sat down with Ben and Carling to try and figure out just what the band is all about and how to describe it.
Ben: When I first started the band this was my goal – an electro-rock/pop sort of thing. Many, many people wanted to join the project and I said, yes, let’s have a drummer, let’s have a bassist, let’s have another guitarist. We even had three guitars at one point – I’m pretty sure we’ve even had four guitars on stage.
