Friday night in Phnom Penh finds Vart Van at Thmor Supper Club and new jazz trio Treble Entendre at Craft, while Green Leaf Motif are at Botanico and Miss Sarawan are at new venue Velvet Room, off St 19 behind the Royal Palace.  Later on, Montra are at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Saturday night in Phnom Penh there’s Gabbie Elle at Thmor Supper Club and MUXU (Marianna Hensley and Greg Beshers)at Botanico, while The Boeung Kak Lifesavers (Scott Bywater & David Zdriluk) are at Little Susie.  Cloud presents a triple-bill of Boxchords, Alli G & TheQuilas and Mourin Terry, and DanDan is at Sundance.  Cambodia Country Band returns to Oscar’s on the Corner and PMAC at Harry’s & The Welsh Consulate in Siem Reap.

Sunday best: Ten years of the Sunday Sundowner Sessions at TacoKat

There is little so transitory as the Phnom Penh musical landscape.  Venues rise and fall, bands congeal and fragment, big names expand and disappear, and above all, open mics come and go at a relentless rate.  Some few have lasted a long time – take the Sharky jam or the Paddy Rice open mic which both provided on-going employment, entertainment and occasional suffering for many a host.

Standing apart from all of the above is the Sunday Sundowner Sessions established at Rubies Wine Bar at the end of 2012.  With the demise of Rubies in August 2013, the Sundowners were moved to what was then the Alley Cat Café, now known as Tacos Kokopelli.  This weekend TacoKat (as it is affectionately known) celebrates ten years of Sunday Sundowners with an extra-long edition – 4 – 9 pm – a special BBQ buffet for performers from 4 – 6 pm.
