Greetings:

The big event this weekend in Phnom Penh is a double-header for the longest running expat rock’n’roll band in the country, Joe & the Jumping Jacks, at Oscar’s on the Corner.  Saturday night they launch their new EP, then on Sunday they mark their tenth anniversary with their regular Sunday night residency which includes a video shoot.  It’s always well worth checking out their energetic show – more to read below.

There are some interesting things tonight, Thursday, in Phnom Penh for those who get the weekend started early.  Stu Cottom welcomes Meas Superstars at Villa Grange, while Indonesian Independence Day is celebrated at Craft with Intan & George.  La Union are at Samai Rum Distillery, Antonio El Chico & the Playful Minds are at Duplex, Austin and Ratha are at Mayazon and Kevin Sysyn is at Excelsior. Taking it late and loud as usual are The Extraordinary Chambers at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Friday night in Phnom Penh sees Pepper Jam III with Colin, Keiko & Issei at Green Pepper, Ice at Botanico and Joshua & Denver at The Tin Hat.  Later The Sock Essentials return to Cloud and Soselo Summer commence their month-plus victory lap at Oscar’s on the Corner, followed by Montra.  In Siem Reap, Salazar Quartet are at Villa D and there’s the open mic at The Welsh Consulate.

Saturday night in Phnom Penh starts with Gabbie Elle at Thmor Supper Club, with Antonio El Chico at Botanico, Phil Javelle at Little Susie and new act One Krovan at Sundance, plus Joe & the Jumping Jacks launching their EP at Oscar’s on the Corner.   In Kampot, Kampot Playboys are at KAPAL and Brooke & James at The Bay, while in Siem Reap Giuliano & Neena are at Harry’s & The Welsh Consulate and Jam-Cha are at Star Bar.

Department of What We’re Excited About This Week

In August 2013, guitar player and singer Joe Wrigley enlisted the musical talents of Scott Bywater on drums and Adrien Gayraud on bass to form a 1950s-style rockabilly trio, and Joe and The Jumping Jacks debuted on a Wednesday night at Doors Phnom Penh (don’t look for it, it’s gone) during the Vibe Music Fest. Making up for his lack of musical mastery with a lot of enthusiasm and passion, Joe progressed the band with many early gigs at Slur Bar and Oscar 51. Over the ensuing years, the group became a ‘who’s who’ of Phnom Penh expat musicians, with more than 50 different players completing at least one full gig as a Jumping Jack. The band has rocked packed houses up and down Cambodia and as far afield as Vietnam and Hong Kong.  Eventually, Joe’s lead guitar-playing skills started to make the grade and the band solidified into a rock’n’roll power trio, eventually settling on the line-up of Greg Beshers on bass and vocals and Sal DiGaetano on drums. Since 2020, Joe and The Jumping Jacks have honed their set with a weekly Sunday gig at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Celebrate with them this weekend at Oscar’s with an EP launch gig on Saturday and a special tenth anniversary gig and video shoot on Sunday.
