Greetings:

Visiting Cambodia this weekend is German double bass player Andreas Dehner, who will be playing with a quartet at Anantara Angkor Resort in Siem Reap on Thursday, and at Plantation in Phnom Penh on Saturday (see Passing Chords below).  Note both are ticketed events.

Also this weekend the commencement of the LostnFound tour by local indie artist Sam Rocker (with Drain the Sun and Phanit), who are in Phnom Penh at Cloud on Friday and Distortion Dive Bar on Saturday, before heading to Siem Reap and Battambang over the next couple of weeks.

Thursday in Phnom Penh kicks off as usual with the jazz jam with Dr George at Tape Deck, Joe Wrigley presents Joe Jambalaya, a Hank Williams tribute, at Motodop, while Stu Cottom is followed by Kevin Sysyn at Excelsior.  Later The Extraordinary Chambers are at Oscar’s on the Corner.

On Friday evening in Phnom Penh, Ethereal Journey (Mirasol, Jedil and James Parm) are at Motodop and Miss Sarawan is at Khmer Funk Sky Bar. The Broken Cymbal are at Botanico,  Alli G hosts an open mic at The Tin Hat, and Stu Cottom follows the footy at The Vine.  Later and louder, the keyboard driven rock and pop of The Ivory Express is at Oscar’s on the Corner.  In Siem Reap, Rainy Season are at Laundry and Acid Fuzz Trio are at The Panthers Hut.

On Saturday morning in Phnom Penh get out and sing at the Half day choir – from Stockholm to Serengeti event at The Box Office.  In the afternoon Lisa Concepcion is at Shangri-La, Stu Cottom goes on before the NRL rugby at Lone Star Saloon, and The Originals Sessions at Tape Deck features Agent P & the Resistance, James Parm and brand new act Stellar Zhou.  Then Japan Guitar Shop are joined by Wayfarer State at Motodop, Zakk Zoot is at Botanico, Sinville Roadshow are at Noisy Chili, Kevin Sysyn is at Tropico and Stu Cottom is at The Phoenix Bar (formerly The Silk Route).  Later on, Cambodia Country Band are at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Come Sunday, Gaby & Chema are at The Vine, Scott Bywater hosts the Sunday Sundowners open mic at Tacos Kokopelli, and Greg Beshers is at Hunt.  Later it’s Stu Cottom’s last show (for the moment) with Shaken Spirit at Oscar’s on the Corner.

Passing Chords – a few things you may not know about

Do you have a pet musical hate/pet peeve?
Bad lead sheets. Things that could be written simply, but are notated in a way that makes sight-reading much harder than it needs to be.

A private musical indulgence:
I sometimes transfer drum rudiment exercises to my right hand and practice them on my bass while watching series.

The year you first came to Cambodia:
2026.  This is my first time. I lived in Malaysia for eight years, and Cambodia was always on my list. Now I finally made it.

An early music memory:
As a kid I made up songs on the violin, and my father tried to write down what I was playing.

The last thing you had to eat:
Smash My Bun Burger.

Stagefright – yes or no?
Yes. Rarely, and only a bit, at meaningful concerts where I’m exposed. When I’m underprepared, playing unfamiliar things, and it’s unpredictable whether it will work or not. And then usually only right before I start playing.

A country you want to visit:
America. I’ve been to many countries, but never to the US.

A book or movie you keep going back to:
The Back to the Future films. Childhood movies. I haven’t watched them in a while, but I keep coming back to them.

What languages do you have?
German and English. I learned French and Spanish at school. I don’t really speak them, but I can understand a bit.

 

Your primary instrument, and when you started playing it:
Double bass. I started at 14, after playing violin from the age of seven.

 

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
I am crazy about durian, especially Malaysian durian.

 

You have a time machine and a magic ticket to one gig or festival in the past. What do you choose?
The Bill Evans Trio at the Village Vanguard, June 1961. The recordings that became the albums Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby. Scott LaFaro unfortunately died just a few days later.

 

A question from the last participant: do you ever seem strange even to yourself?
Yes. You have to sacrifice a lot as a musician until you reach a professional level. That’s when you can seem strange even to yourself. It’s a particular kind of life.
